Single-story house with tan horizontal siding and a dark shingled hip roof, fronted by a patchy green and brown lawn and a concrete walkway leading to the covered entry.

Sizing a mini-split here starts with an honest look at what the compressor is actually asked to do. Homes in Hamlin County, SD run cooling in a single month of the year, July. The condenser fan and contactor log short service each year, so when a system fails ahead of schedule, the install itself is the first place a contractor looks: refrigerant charge, line-set routing, and whether the unit was matched to the actual load of the house. A compressor that sits off for most of the year and still fails early was not brought down by wear.

Electrical service panels in houses this old were sized for a different era's load, and a mini-split draws more than the original circuits were laid out to carry. Half the homes in Hamlin County, South Dakota were built in 1969 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap is where a contractor's assessment lands first: what the panel actually holds, what the existing wiring runs to, and whether either needs work before the new unit can be connected. The ductwork question drops away with a mini-split, since the system runs without it, but the electrical question stays.

The Parts of a Mini-split System Being Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing two wall-mounted mini-split indoor units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser beside the building, with a sofa, table and chairs inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and delivers conditioned air directly into that space. Outside the house, the outdoor unit houses the compressor and sits on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall. Together these two units do the work the system was bought to do.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall and connects the indoor and outdoor units. A condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor handler to a safe discharge point. A dedicated power supply feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your home.
