Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story gray horizontal-siding house with multiple gables, a small second-story dormer window, a covered front entry, an outdoor air conditioning unit, young shrubs along the foundation, and a patchy green and brown lawn under a clear blue sky.

Sizing is the first question a contractor settles before quoting a mini-split install in this area. Homes in McCook County, SD run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. The compressor and condenser fan are doing all their work inside that window, with no shoulder months to mask a unit running harder than it should. An undersized system starts and stops more than it should, and that cycling pattern wears the contactor and compressor bearings faster than steady runtime would. A contractor who skips a proper load calculation and pulls a number from square footage alone leaves the homeowner with equipment that will show the error before long.

Older electrical panels in this county were built for smaller loads than a mini-split draws, which means the panel gets assessed before the installation quote can close. Half the homes in McCook County, South Dakota were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor who skips that step may price the equipment accurately and miss the cost of bringing the service up to what the new unit requires. The ductwork question does not apply to a mini-split, but the electrical one does, and it is decided by what is already in the house.

The Mini-split Components an HVAC Installation Covers

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. It draws in room air, conditions it, and delivers it back into the space. Outside the house, the outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or a wall bracket and houses the compressor and the fan that reject heat to the exterior.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall, connecting the indoor and outdoor units and carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also routes from the indoor unit to move moisture out of the house, and a dedicated electrical line feeds the outdoor unit from the panel.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each component positions in your home.
