A mini-split compressor in Brookings County sees very little of the calendar under load. Homes in Brookings County, SD run cooling in a single month of the year, July. A contractor diagnosing a failure in that window is looking at a machine that has barely cycled, which rules out the gradual wear that builds on a system running through a long season. Contactor pitting, refrigerant loss from a cracked joint, a capacitor that failed on the first hard start of the year: these are the failure modes that fit the runtime picture here, and a good tech checks startup components before anything else.

Half the homes in Brookings County, South Dakota were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That puts most of the housing stock well past the point where the original infrastructure still runs unchanged. For a mini-split repair, what a contractor finds once the unit is open is the variable that drives the job: whether the refrigerant circuit holds, whether the board has failed or the sensor has, whether the parts a system of that age still takes are in supply. The house around it has had time to be updated. The opened system has not.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor units connected by lines running to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and is the piece most homeowners notice first. It pulls room air across a coil and pushes conditioned air back out. When it is the source of the problem, a contractor finds the fault there: a clogged coil, a failed blower wheel, a refrigerant leak at the coil connections, or a board that has stopped responding.

The outdoor condenser sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor, a second coil, and the fan that exhausts heat. The refrigerant line set and the control wiring run between the two units through a small penetration in the wall. A fault in the compressor, a refrigerant loss along the lines, or a wiring break between the units all show up as problems with the system as a whole.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components and connections apply to your specific installation.
